Difference between berry and fruit
Food, Fruits | Kim Lean | November 9, 2009 at 8:33 pmThis seems like an odd question, however we’ve seen a lot of people looking for the answer to this questions. Berries are fruit, however there are many unique types. Fruits are the means by which flowering plants disseminate seeds, and the presence of seeds indicates that a structure is most likely a fruit, though not all seeds come from fruits. This includes berries.
First, there are common types of fruit :
- Berry – simple fruit and seeds created from a single ovary (Ex. Grape)
- Pepo – Berries where the skin is hardened, like cucurbits
- Hesperidium – Berries with a rind, like most citrus fruit
- Epigynous berries(false berries) – Epigynous fruit made from a part of the plant other than a single ovary (Ex. Banana, watermelon, blueberry)
- Compound fruit, which includes:
- Aggregate fruit – multiple fruits with seeds from different ovaries of a single flower (Ex. raspberry)
- Multiple fruit – fruits of separate flowers, packed closely together(Ex. pineapple)
- Other accessory fruit – where the edible part is not generated by the ovary(Ex. Strawberry)
